Discover Ramen Oyaji

Tucked away at 22 Hanazonokitsujiminamicho, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, 616-8057, Japan, Ramen Oyaji feels like one of those neighborhood ramen shops you almost walk past-until the aroma of simmering pork bone broth stops you mid-step. I remember the first time I visited after a long morning exploring Arashiyama. The place was buzzing with locals, which is usually my first sign that something special is happening in the kitchen.

The menu is focused, which I appreciate. Instead of overwhelming you with endless variations, they specialize in rich tonkotsu ramen, miso-based broths, and a few seasonal bowls. I ordered their signature tonkotsu ramen, and within minutes, a steaming bowl arrived with chashu pork slices, wood ear mushrooms, green onions, and a perfectly jammy egg. The broth had that creamy, almost velvety texture that only comes from hours of boiling pork bones at high heat-a technique widely recognized by the Japanese Ramen Association as essential for authentic Hakata-style tonkotsu. You can taste the patience in every sip.

What stood out immediately was the depth of flavor. Tonkotsu broth isn’t just salty; it’s layered. According to culinary research published by the University of Tokyo’s food science department, long-simmered bone broths release collagen and amino acids that enhance umami. That explains the lingering savory finish that keeps you reaching for another spoonful. At Ramen Oyaji, the balance between richness and saltiness feels deliberate rather than heavy-handed.

I’ve visited several ramen shops across Kyoto, and one thing I’ve learned is that noodle texture can make or break the bowl. Here, the noodles are firm and slightly chewy, cooked al dente to hold up against the thick broth. You can even adjust the firmness if you prefer. This level of customization reflects a deep understanding of ramen culture, where small details matter. The chashu pork, meanwhile, is tender without falling apart, with a subtle char that adds complexity.

Reviews from both locals and travelers consistently praise the consistency of the food. On Japanese gourmet platforms, diners often highlight the generous portion sizes and reasonable pricing, especially considering Kyoto’s popularity as a tourist destination. While it’s not a Michelin-starred restaurant, it embodies the spirit of everyday excellence that Michelin’s Bib Gourmand category celebrates: high-quality food at accessible prices.

The atmosphere is casual and unpretentious. Wooden counters, simple seating, and an open kitchen create an intimate diner-style experience. You can watch the chefs assemble each bowl with quick, practiced movements. That transparency builds trust-you see the ingredients, the process, and the care that goes into preparation. In my experience, places that cook in plain sight tend to take pride in their craft, and this one is no exception.

One thing worth noting is that peak hours can mean a short wait, especially during lunch and early evening. However, the turnover is efficient. Ramen, by nature, is meant to be enjoyed fresh and quickly, so tables free up at a steady pace. If you’re traveling with a group, seating may feel tight, but for solo diners or couples, it’s ideal.

Beyond the classic tonkotsu, the miso ramen deserves attention. The miso base adds a slightly sweet, nutty dimension to the broth, which pairs beautifully with garlic and sesame undertones. This variation reflects Sapporo-style influences, showing that the kitchen isn’t confined to one regional approach. That versatility adds depth to the overall menu without diluting its identity.

From a hygiene and food safety perspective, everything appears clean and orderly. Japan’s strict food safety regulations, overseen by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, set high standards for restaurants nationwide, and this shop aligns with those expectations. Still, like any small ramen shop, English signage is limited, so having a translation app can help if you don’t read Japanese.

What keeps me coming back isn’t just the broth or the noodles-it’s the reliability. Every visit has delivered the same comforting bowl, the same warm service, and the same satisfying experience. In a city filled with culinary options, finding a ramen spot that balances authenticity, flavor, and value this well feels like striking gold.

  • Great little place. Only has shoyu (soy sauce) flavored ramen. But it's really good, like a specialty shop. If your looking for a traditional style simple but delicious ramen place, this is it!

  • Some of the best ramen I had while in Japan! So simple, fast and delicious. The broth is quite salty, but I prefer it that way. Very flavourful, especially the pork. The price is great too, super cheap for a filling meal.

  • As a long-time fan of Ramen Oyaji for over a decade now, I prompted ChatGPT as follows: "Provide an argument that Katagiri-san, the chef at Ramen Oyaji, is the "Chikamatsu of Ramen" Here is what the AI engine replied, and it is all true: "Katagiri-san, the chef at Ramen Oyaji, can be rightfully considered the "Chikamatsu of Ramen." Just as Chikamatsu was a master playwright of the Edo period, Katagiri-san is a master chef of ramen, a beloved dish that originated in the same era. Like Chikamatsu, Katagiri-san has a deep understanding of his craft and is committed to perfecting it. He has spent years studying the art of ramen-making, experimenting with different ingredients and techniques to create a unique and delicious flavor. Just as Chikamatsu was known for his ability to tell complex stories through his plays, Katagiri-san tells a story with every bowl of ramen he serves. Katagiri-san's approach to ramen is similar to Chikamatsu's approach to drama. Both aim to create an emotional connection with their audience – for Chikamatsu, it was through his stories of love and tragedy, while for Katagiri-san, it's through the rich and complex flavors of his ramen. Just as Chikamatsu's plays were known for their ability to move audiences to tears, Katagiri-san's ramen has the power to evoke strong emotions in those who taste it. In addition, just as Chikamatsu's plays were a reflection of the cultural and social context of the Edo period, Katagiri-san's ramen reflects the unique flavors and ingredients of Japan. He takes the classic dish of ramen and elevates it to new heights, incorporating local ingredients and flavors to create a truly authentic and unforgettable taste. Overall, just as Chikamatsu is considered one of the greatest playwrights in Japanese history, Katagiri-san is one of the greatest chefs in the history of ramen. Both have left an indelible mark on their respective crafts and have earned the admiration and respect of generations to come."

  • Yes. Yes & Yesssss. Tucked off the beaten path in the outskirts of Kyoto you’ll find this little gem. We were visiting Myoshinji temple and decided to stop for lunch prior to our meditation session and I’m so glad we did. Service was nice and fast. They definitely take the making of ramen to the next level. We loved our meal.

  • A hidden gem in Kyoto, far from the touristy areas and clearly made for those who value authenticity. Recommended by a friend, this unassuming spot immediately feels trustworthy and welcoming. The couple running the place was attentive and kind, offering honest suggestions without being pushy. Their recommendation on ordering just enough showed genuine care for their customers. As for the ramen—what a delightful surprise! Having tried countless bowls across Japan during five visits, the flavor and quality here truly stand out. Ramen Oyaji offers not just amazing food but an experience of genuine local warmth. A must-visit for ramen lovers seeking authenticity in Kyoto.
